In San Francisco, First New Muni Train Goes Into Service

SFMTA officials said, the first Muni train rolled onto the tracks in SF as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency adds to and eventually replaces all of its trains. SF Mayor Ed Lee said on Twitter, “San Francisco, your commute just got a sleek upgrade.”

According to Paul Rose, SFMTA spokesman, “The train's first fair-paying passenger was greeted to a lot of applause and seemed pleasantly surprised.” He said, “The next new train is expected to debut on Muni tracks next month and one to two new trains are expected every week after that.” The officials are planning to roll out approx 24 new trains by the end of 2018.

Agency officials are planning to have the entire fleet replaced by 2028. Rose explain the new look of the trains and he said that passengers have appreciated the new look and features of the new upcoming trains.

The new features will reduce the rate of malfunctions and train delays as per agency officials. The trains are designed with leaning pads, wider aisles, pull-down seats, and space for strollers.

The late Larry Martin (a Muni employee and former president of the Transport Workers Union Local 250-A, who died last month), the new train commemorates, started his career with Muni in 1966. In Martin’s honor, a plaque was unveiled on the new train.
